A marketing-finance approach linking contracts in agricultural channels to shareholder value AgEcon
Pennings, Joost M.E.; Wansink, Brian; Hoffmann, Arvid O.I..
A conceptual marketing-finance framework is proposed which links channel contracting in agriculture and the use of financial facilitating services (e.g., financial derivatives) to (shareholder) value creation. The framework complements existing literature by explicitly including channel contract relationships as market-based assets that can be managed to reduce cash flow volatility and hence increase shareholder value. We show how financial facilitating services (e.g., derivatives) can be used to complement the cash flows components of channel contract relationships thereby further reducing the risk adjusted cost of capital and improving shareholder value. In a field study of producers, wholesalers, and processors, in the potato and meat industry the...

A review of Multi-Agent Simulation Models in Agriculture AgEcon
Kaye-Blake, William; Li, Frank Y.; Martin, A. McLeish; McDermott, Alan; Neil, Hayley; Rains, Scott.
Multi-Agent Simulation (MAS) models are intended to capture emergent properties of complex systems that are not amenable to equilibrium analysis. They are beginning to see some use for analysing agricultural systems. The paper reports on work in progress to create a MAS for specific sectors in New Zealand agriculture. One part of the paper focuses on options for modelling land and other resources such as water, labour and capital in this model, as well as markets for exchanging resources and commodities. A second part considers options for modelling agent heterogeneity, especially risk preferences of farmers, and the impacts on decision-making. The final section outlines the MAS that the authors will be constructing over the next few years and the types of...

AN INSIGHT INTO THE ECONOMIC VALUE OF REEF ENVIRONMENTS THROUGH THE LITERATURE: THE CASE OF THE SEAFLOWER BIOSPHERE RESERVE Boletín de Investigaciones
Londoño-Díaz,Luz; Vargas-Morales,Myriam.
The Seaflower Biosphere Reserve (SBR) is one of the few places in Colombia with a set of available studies on the economic value of its reef environments. This paper seeks to review the policy applications of these studies, and evaluate the use of benefit transfer (BT) methods to predict value estimates for sites in the SBR where no valuations have been performed. First, the paper provides an analysis and categorization of policy uses of existing results. A set of economic valuation studies were identified as somewhat influential in policy applications, because they provided financial sustainability tools for marine protected areas. A case study was selected from the pool of influential studies in order to assess the viability of BT. Second, the viability...

Comment on "Purported flaws in management strategy evaluation: basic problems or misinterpretation?" by Butterworth et al. ArchiMer
Rochet, Marie-joelle; Rice, Jake C..
Simulation-based management strategy evaluation is a valuable tool, when appropriately implemented. Implementation, however, may not always have been appropriate, and some reasons are provided why perhaps there is incomplete faith in certain of its technical aspects, such as knowing the distribution of the parameters of population processes from the information in limited datasets. A management strategy that has been evaluated by simulation should not be used as an "autopilot", because even the most competent of experts can develop autopilots with imperfect and incomplete knowledge of reality, and all information should be incorporated when decisions have to be made.

Comparative Performance of Selected Mathematical Programming Models AgEcon
Arriaza Balmón, Manuel; Gomez-Limon, Jose Antonio.
This study compares the predictive performance of several mathematical programming models. Using the cropping patterns, yields and crop gross margins of eighteen farms over a period of five years we compare the models' optimum solutions with observed crop distributions after the Reform of the EU Common Agricultural Policy of 1992. The results show that the best prediction corresponds to a model that includes expected profit and a qualitative measure of crop riskiness. The results suggest that, in order to obtain reliable predictions, the modelling of farmers' responses to policy changes must consider the risk associated with any given cropping pattern. Finally, we test the ability of the proposed model to reproduce the farmers' observed behaviour with...

Constructing a Social Development Network within a Rural Municipal Government in Portugal AgEcon
Koehnen, Timothy; Cristovao, Artur.
In Portugal, an experimental Social Development Network (SDN) programme has been promoted at the national level by the Social Development Institute (SDI). The major operational objective of the SDN is to construct advisory councils and local commis- sions to increase local participation. The advisory council is represented by local de- velopment stakeholders from governmental and non-governmental institutions. These stakeholders define the actions to be taken for the social development agenda in the municipal government. The paper depicts the achievements and inadequacies of this network. In general, the case-study evaluation determines if the network strengthens the social action process in a rural area faced by social constraints,...

Controlling Ozone and Fine Particulates: Cost Benefit Analysis with Meteorological Variability AgEcon
Shih, Jhih-Shyang; Bergin, Michelle S.; Krupnick, Alan J.; Russell, Armistead G..
In this paper, we develop an integrated cost-benefit analysis framework for ozone and fine particulate control, accounting for variability and uncertainty. The framework includes air quality simulation, sensitivity analysis, stochastic multi-objective air quality management, and stochastic cost-benefit analysis. This paper has two major contributions. The first is the development of stochastic source-receptor (S-R) coefficient matrices for ozone and fine particulate matter using an advanced air quality simulation model (URM-1ATM) and an efficient sensitivity algorithm (DDM-3D). The second is a demonstration of this framework for alternative ozone and PM2.5 reduction policies. Alternative objectives of the stochastic air quality management model include...

Coordination Strategy Decisions in Sao Paulo's Fresh Produce Markets: An Empirical Validation of the Peterson, Wysocki & Harsh Framework AgEcon
Mainville, Denise Y.; Peterson, H. Christopher.
This paper provides an empirical validation of the Peterson, Wysocki & Harsh (PWH) framework for coordination strategy decisions, drawing evidence from four firms' procurement strategies in São Paulo's fresh produce markets. The results support the hypothesis that the PWH framework provides empirical and theoretical insight into firm managers' coordination decisions. The cases show how asset specificity and complementarity affect the costliness of coordination decisions, how this costliness drives the decision to change coordination strategies, and how feasibility and risk/return criteria also apply. Additional insights into coordination strategy decisions that were generated in applying the framework and their potential relevance to the framework are...

Female Participation in Decision-Making in Agricultural Households in Kenya: Empirical Findings AgEcon
Kiriti, Tabitha; Tisdell, Clement A.; Roy, Kartik C..
Survey data on which this paper is based were collected in a rural district in Kenya between December 2000 and January 2001. The main objective was to identify the factors that determine female participation in household decision-making. Our results suggest that bargaining models and resource theory cannot be applied in a society where customarily determined sex and social stratification systems place males higher than females and determines that only men make major decisions. Our results support the hypothesis that cultural theory is more significant than bargaining models or resource theories in determining women's participation in decision-making in Kenya.

How can Farmer Managerial Capacity Contribute to Improved Farm Performance? A Study of Dairy Farms in Sweden AgEcon
Johansson, Helena.
This paper investigates how managerial capacity aspects influence efficiency of dairy farms in Sweden. Based on non-parametric methods, Tobit and logistic regressions, several managerial capacity aspects are found to influence long and short run input efficiency scores, but to influence output efficiency less. Examples of important aspects are: internal locus of control, positive profitability attitude, profitability perception and participation in study circles. Based on this, a way of supporting dairy farms to become more profitable is to organize educational and discussion clubs where the farmers learn from each other and form professional dairy farm advisors.

Indigenous Social Capital in Traditional Agro-Food Marketing Systems: The Role of Trust in Governance Structure Selection in the Philippine Highlands AgEcon
Milagrosa, Aimee; Slangen, Louis H.G..
The decision-making of indigenous Ibaloi and Kankanaey growers in seven highland communities of Benguet, Cordillera region Philippines was captured in three models. The models explain factors affecting their selection of primary transacting partners. The farmers’ three main primary marketing links are commissioners, wholesalers and contractors. Commissioner-led governance structures are market-based and the relationship is motivated by profit. Wholesaler-led governance structures are partly-market and partly-hybrid-based and are characterized by the motivations of profit, relationship and safeguard benefits. Contractor-led transactions are hybrid modes of organization that are motivated strongly by trust. In governance structure selection, farmers attempt...

Although few successful examples of large-scale adaptive management applications are available to ecosystem restoration scientists and managers, examining where and how the components of an adaptive management program have been successfully implemented yields insight into what approaches have and have not worked. We document five key lessons learned during the decade-long development and implementation of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP) Collaborative Adaptive Management Program that might be useful to other adaptive management practitioners. First, legislative and regulatory authorities that require the development of an adaptive management program are necessary to maintain funding and support to set up and implement adaptive...

Model evaluation of quality attributes for hops (Humulus lupulus L.) Agrociencia
Pavlovic,Martin; Pavlovic,Viljem.
Hops (Humulus lupulus L.) ate vital fot the brewing industry, as they contribute significantly to the organoleptic qualities of beet, including taste and flavor. Experimental hop breeding data from the Slovenian Institute of Hop Research and Brewing (IHPS) were used to create a model based on the multi-attribute decision modeling methodology. The model has 18 attributes hierarchically grouped within four main attributes: Biology, Chemistry, Morphology and Brewing value. Furthermore, utility functions in the model were defined by sets of elementary decision rules throughout the entire hierarchy for all aggregated attributes. The central part of the model contains 144 decision rules, which were specified according to the model users' previous breeding...

MULTIPLE JOB-HOLDING AMONG U.S. FARM WOMEN: OFF-FARM WORK AND ON-FARM DECISION-MAKING USING A BARGAINING APPROACH AgEcon
Findeis, Jill L.; Swaminathan, Hema.
Participation rates for farm women in off-farm labor markets continue to increase, as does their participation in making major farm decisions such as whether to buy or sell land, adopt a new production practice or invest in farm equipment. Data from the Survey of U.S. Farm Women conducted in 2001 by Penn State in collaboration with researchers at the Economic Research Service and in collaboration with NASS are used to examine the multiple work roles of farm women off the farm and in farming. Descriptive statistics for the results of the 2001 survey are compared to those from the last major survey of U.S. farm women conducted by Rosenfeld in 1980. Then, using data limited to farm couples, models of job choice considering jointness in participation are...

Priority ranking of road sites for mitigating wildlife roadkill Biota Neotropica
Bager,Alex; Rosa,Clarissa Alves da.
We propose a ranking index to assign priorities to sites for implementation of measures to mitigate wildlife roadkill. We conducted a case study along 34 km of highway BR 392 in Southern Brazil. We compared priority sites established only according to roadkill rates, with those defined by our index. The index used four parameters: the richness of target species, diversity of roadkilled species, roadkill rate of target species, and presence of endangered species. Although it is impossible to protect the entire community of vertebrates affected by roadkill, we defined nine target species, five mammals and four reptiles. For each parameter, we defined coefficients ranging between 0 and 3. There was a significant change in the priorities of sites for...
